National Haiku Poetry Day

Here's something you might not have known about me: I love poetry. I write it, I've published it, and I read it. I enjoy the way poetry can allow you to express yourself. Sometimes people think poetry is about stuff that is over people's heads, or hoity toity so that no one can understand it. I get why they feel that way, but really there is a huge variety of poetry so I would encourage anyone to keep reading until they find a poet they really like.

Some of my favorite poetry books:

I also like Emily Dickinson and just about anything Maya Angelou writes.

Today happens to be National Haiku Poetry Day. Haiku is a form of poetry, and to give you a complete definition I went to About's Poetry site:

"Haiku is an unrhymed, syllabic form adapted from the Japanese: three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables. Because it is so brief, a haiku is necessarily imagistic, concrete and pithy, capturing a single moment in a very few words."

Have you ever written a poem related to friendship? Give it a try sometime, you might be surprised at the feelings it evokes. If you like what you write, you can always give the poem to a friend as a last minute gift idea as well. If you need some inspiration to get you started, why not check out this collection of friendship quotes from the literary world.

My favorite quote on friendship is one by Henri Nouwen :) He writes

““When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.
