Small Talk Subjects for Week of May 21, 2012

I've decided that since so many of you ask me about how to talk to people in order to make friends, I'll start posting some small talk subjects here and there to help you out. These are items I've come across that are interesting and would make good topics to chat about with a new online friend, an acquaintance, or someone to trying to be friends with.

These are subjects that are newsworthy, generally non-controversial, and offer plenty of opportunities for branching out from small talk to more meaningful conversation.

I Married a Mad Man

I've mentioned that watching the show Mad Men can help with small talk, and here's proof: This story is about the "real life" Don Draper and the woman that married him. (Hint: the real life guy is interesting but does not have the womanizing past that the fictional Don Draper has.) I did find this story unexpected though, especially when it came to how he proposed to his wife.

Zodiac Killer Cover Up

Remember the Zodiac Killer? There was a movie about this a few years ago but now a new book says that the Zodiac Killer is still alive, and what's more, there was a cover up in the investigation.

Your Good Side?

You've heard actors talk about "their good side," which means that one side of their face supposedly looks better than the other side. One article claims that this is true.

The Forbes Celebrity 100 List

The Forbes Celebrity 100 List talks about the richest and most powerful celebs right now. Makes for interesting small talk with those that like Hollywood, gossip, marketing, and business.

$14K Left at Goodwill?

This story, about people claiming that they left $14,000 at a St. Louis Goodwill store, offers several avenues for small talk. You could ask someone if they would return a large chunk of money if they found it somewhere, what they would do if they got $14,000 unexpectedly, or even if they shop at Goodwill! (I go every week to get glass for some garden sculptures I'm making. Just saying.)
