When you think of the term "selfishness," you generally think of someone alone. At least, that's how I view it. I first think of a selfish person as someone who can't get along with other people because they always need their own way, or someone who is so unpleasant to be around that they are always alone. But selfishness really isn't that extreme. In fact, we're all selfish from time to time, and what's more, we sometimes need to be.
Life is a balance and our friendships are a part of that. Sometimes we give everything to a friend that doesn't appreciate it or even perhaps, deserve it. Other times, we need to pull away from someone. We may be called selfish for this. But you are the only one that knows what's right for you personally.
The trouble is, it's sometimes hard to make the right decision. Being selfish with friendship isn't always as clear cut as you'd think. Here are some quotes on selfishness, along with my thoughts on how they apply to friendship. I hope they help to clarify any uncertainty you might be feeling about a friend.
