I was really enjoying the Olympic coverage over the last couple of weeks. Weren't you? After coverage ended, a friend of mine pointed out that she'd met several of her friends through sports. I had to agree. Some of my lifelong friends are all from when I played sports in high school and even middle school. I think it's a great way to bond with people and learn how to be part of a team.
For me especially, it was a good way to help me meet people even though I was an introvert. I had a hard time just walking up to folks to say hello when I was in school, and was always pretty reserved. So being in sports gave me something to talk about right away. We could chat about the game, our coaches, the plays we made... and it was easy to get to know people that way. Plus, the team environment helped bond us more quickly than if we'd met in class or the lunchroom.
But sports aren't just for kids. They're a good way for adults to meet new friends, too. I get notices all the time looking for adults to play in various team sports around the area. If you're looking to make friends, consider joining a team. Try out a few different sports until you find one you really enjoy.
