Good to See You! Following Up After a Meetup

Do you use the site Meetup? It's a good way to get connected with new groups by finding others who are interested in the same type of activities you are. I noticed that the site now has a "Good to See You Button" which you can use to easily send a note to someone new you met. This is a simple way to connect and say "hello" without having to write out an entire email.

Remember that the first time you meet someone new you need to put your best foot forward and make a good impression. Then, ask a new friend to meet you for coffee and get to know them better. It could mean the start of a new friendship.

I've used Meetup to find other book lovers and also to join a few business groups. Have you found it a helpful resource?

What is the etiquette for this button? Do you use it for anyone you talked to, those you had a long conversation, or only those people you might want to date? I went to a meetup and only got a message from someone who was interested in me. Yet it seems like too simple a way to greet people if you are interested. I’d send an e-mail expressing interest, not just click a button.

There’s more info on the button on the Meetup site. Check it out for more on what’s appropriate. It sounds to me like it’s for anyone that you’re interested in talking to further, which would include friends or those you’re interested in romantically.

Personally, I’m with you, if I had an interest in getting to know someone better I’d probably just send an email rather than use the button. But I think it helps people who are busy or shy start a dialog when they might not have done so before.
