Booklovers Are Social People!

By December 6, 2012

Follow me on:

When I was a kid my mom was concerned that I'd grow up to be a social misfit because I liked to read so much. She needn't have worried. There are plenty of ways for booklovers to connect with others, and they can start with their love of reading. Book groups and author appearances are just a couple ways that readers can connect with each other. Here are some other ways.

My favorite author appearance actually involved two of my favorite authors. One was Elinor Lipman, who was the featured author. I loved hearing about what she had to say (she's very funny and clever and if you ever get a chance to see her - take it!) and as she was about to take questions she called on Jane Hamilton who was in the audience! (Hamilton is another favorite of mine.) It was a thrill to see both of these authors at the same event.

I've been to several author events and book readings, and even when I don't know the author's work all that well, I always come away with something. Even if you don't meet anyone at the event you go to, attending will give you something to share the next time you meet a fan of that author.

Have you ever attended an author discussion or book group?
