Friend Applies Makeup at the Table

By January 9, 2013

Follow me on:

I got this question recently about proper table manners, but really it's about something a friend does that really bugs us. (We've all been there, right?)

The reader asks:

"As soon as we get done eating, my friend pulls out her lipstick and puts it on while we're talking. I think she should go to the bathroom to do this. Shouldn't she?"

This question inspired me to write more about these types of issues, where friends and acquaintances might wonder what's appropriate behavior for things like funeral dress, inviting pregnant friends to be bridesmaids, or responding to party invitations.

By the way, discreetly putting on lipstick or re-powdering your nose is considered okay in the etiquette world.  Here are ten more common etiquette questions.
