Sayings About Friends From Your Favorite Films

Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes has some classic quotes about friendship.

Movies can entertain, inspire, and teach us about ourselves and our relationships. I've got several favorite movies that illustrate wonderful examples of friendships, and I know you do, too. Here, I've listed some of the quotes from those movies. Use them in notes you write to friends, as inspiration, or just to remind yourself that the work sometimes involved with making and keeping friends is definitely worth it.

Fried Green Tomatoes

"I found out what the secret to life is--friends. Best friends."

One thing I like about this friendship quote is that it refers to the plural for "best friends." Not just one friend, but many close friends. I think this is a more realistic view when it comes to expanding your social circle. You might wait years to find one really great best friend with whom you can be yourself. On the other hand, you may find many best friends that you can turn to when you need help or want to celebrate the good times.

If you're looking for just one friend, it's too easy to become frustrated when you don't immediately click the way you had hoped. Friendships take time, but by surrounding yourself with a variety of people you will be able to find folks you bond with.

Shrek

"Donkey, you have the right to remain silent. What you lack, is the capacity."

The movie Shrek actually has a lot of great quotes about friendship, but who can resist this one from Shrek himself as he speaks to Donkey? I love this friendship duo because on the surface, you wouldn't think they would get along. They are as different as an ogre and donkey can be (ha!) but at the same time this is a good thing because they teach each other new things. Donkey has helped Shrek lighten up a bit and allow people to get close to him. I doubt he would have his happy ending with Fiona were it not for Donkey.

This quote speaks to the comfortable nature of their relationship. Donkey knows he babbles a lot, and this is Shrek's way of being honest with him in telling him that he needs to be quiet (for at least a few minutes.)

Stand By Me

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve."

I think a lot of us look at our childhood friendships as something very precious. Our relationships were different then. As we grow up, we deal with the changing events of life and this alters our views of friendship. Sometimes, we're afraid to truly open up and let people in. Other times, we're just so busy we can't devote the time to our friendships. It'd be great if we could always make friends as easily as we did as a kid.

It's a Wonderful Life

"Remember George, no man is a failure who has friends."

This quote is said right at the end of It's a Wonderful Life, when George Bailey has been shown what life would have been like if he were never born. In the end, his friends come through for him without question because of all the large and small ways he showed them kindness over the years. I challenge you not to shed a tear at the end of this movie!

One reason it makes me cry with joy is because George thinks of his life as a series of failures up until that point. Sure, he has a wife that loves him and children that adore him, but his life has turned out differently than he had imagined. So many of us can relate to this. How often have you thought that your life didn't have meaning because you didn't find love, have children, or achieve that goal you wanted to when you were younger? And yet, like George, your life does have meaning. We're not always good at telling each other that, but it's true.
