Looking for a fun movie to watch with your girlfriends? Or just need some inspiration on how to make your friendships better? These movies may just do the trick. Each of these films celebrate female friendship, from the silly and hilarious moments to the sweet and sad.
The movie Bridesmaids is, in some regard, an answer to many movies that feature a guy about to be married, and the hilarity that ensues when his friends plan his bachelor party. The movie skillfully showed that women could be just as funny in this type of scenario as men, and what's even better is that the film earned two Oscar nominations.
Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, and Rose Byrne, among other talented actresses.
If you're looking for a quirky, fun movie, this is it. Muriel's Wedding is about a girl living a boring life in Australia, who listens to Abba songs all day and thinks constantly about what life will be like when she gets married. Of course, like all characters who do nothing but dream about life, she's never actually been on a date and has a unrealistic (but hilarious) vision of love.
Muriel goes on vacation and meets Rhonda, and this is where the fun begins.
One of the best movies ever written,
Return to Me shows the strength of having friends of all generations and ages. The movie has a classic, timeless feel, yet the premise is incredibly original. A man falls in love with the woman who receives his wife's heart. The cast of characters is rich, but the female friendship played by Minnie Driver and writer Bonnie Hunt is particularly lovely.
Written by the fabulous
Nora Ephron, the story centers around the premise that men and women
can't really be just friends. While much of the movie is about Sally Albright (played by Meg Ryan) and Harry Burns (played by Billy Crystal), the scenes between Sally and her pal Marie (played by Carrie Fisher) are especially sweet. If it weren't for Marie, Sally would never end up with Harry.
This movie highlights those
childhood friendships we have, and how they change and adapt as we become adults. The cast of
Now and Then is a filled with strong, seasoned actresses, and several wonderful newcomers, including Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, Rosie O'Donnell, Rita Wilson, Christina Ricci, and Thora Birch.
Beaches is the movie for any woman who has had a friend that was
totally opposite from her. The movie stars Bette Midler as an actress and entertainer and Barbara Hershey as a wealthy socialite. Many women will be able to relate to the up and down nature of their friendship. Seeing Mayim Bialik as a young Bette Midler was an especially sweet part of the film.
If there was ever a movie that illustrated how important it is to have a positive support system in your life, it's Steel Magnolias. After one of their friends loses her daughter, the women rally around her and get her through, in a way that even her husband wouldn't be able to.
The cast of Steel Magnolias is a treat, featuring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, and Olympia Dukakis.
One of the most memorable movies celebrating female friendship,
Thelma and Louise showed two friends in an entirely new way. The movie had fun and serious parts, and the ending is one of the most iconic in movie history. (And looking at a young Brad Pitt isn't bad, either.)
This movie underscores the need to have friends of varying ages and experience. Evelyn (played by Kathy Bates) is a housewife unhappy with her life, and she befriends the much-older Ninny (played by Jessica Tandy). Ninny tells Evelyn a story about her life and in the process, gives Evelyn a whole new outlook on life. Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker also star.
