What I Made
I made a dress out of wool blend, upcycyled sweaters of lots of different colors and textures.
How I Did It
I like to search for the sweaters at garage sales, Goodwill, flea markets, and will always take donations from friends and family. After washing and drying the sweaters in HOT temperatures, I start by cutting rectangles out of the sweaters. I sew the rectangles together on short end on a serger, creating long strips of fabric rectangles. I then sew the long strips together to create the bottom part of the dress. I used a ribbed sweater cut to fit for the waist. I used a solid color sweater for the top, and cut the arms off and used more of the other sweater colors to create stripes for the sleeves. I used the same idea of the sleeves in the hood. Sewed the 4 pieces together to create the dress.
Tips and Tricks
- find similar weights in sweaters and textures. It's nice to have different textures, but not too thick.
- stay open as you create, sometimes the best ideas come from a "mistake"
- try a color of thread that might be totally different than the sweaters used to create contrast.
- when ending the stitch with a serger I like to un-weave the 4 threads and pull them taut, then knot two threads. Sometimes I will use fabric glue.
